Ruby Flipper – Play That Funky Music
Don’t worry chums, I’m not dead! (crosses fingers to avert hubris) Here’s Ruby Flipper dancing to Wild Cherry’s Play That Funky Music on Top of the Pops.

Another clip from German TV channel Einsfestival.

This was there last apperance On totp, and arguably there best. BBC bigwigs put a stop to there fun. I thought they were pretty cool, even Floyd and phillip were alluring in a strange sort of way. But we got legs and co at the expense of these.

The end of an era! But they went out with one of their best dances.
Thank you Floyd, Lulu, Patti, Phil and Sue, Thank you Ruby Flipper.

Ruby Flipper – Disco Duck

TOTP, 23 September 1976: Ruby Flipper dance to Disco Duck by Rick Dees And His Cast Of Idiots.

Silly, very silly, but fun. Floid’s pantomime duck outfit looks to be from the back of dusty cupboard in the BBC wardrobe department. Clearly not designed to be worn on a podium, we get to see just a little to much of the strapping-in undercarraige mechanism of the outfit.

Meanwhile the girls (and Floid, when he’s not in panto mode) are wearing the same charming outfits that they wore for “You Should be Dancing” a few months before.

Ruby Flipper – You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine

Top of the Pops, 9 September 1976:
Ruby Flipper dance to You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine by Lou Rawls

Back in the Summer of 1976, Flick Colby’s choreography was fizzing with ideas. For this Lou Rawls number, she gives us not one but three routines: Floid’s stately podium solo; Goucho Phil and Cherry’s tango; and a teasing fan dance from Sue, Patti and Lulu.

Ruby Flipper – Morning Glory

Top of the Pops, 26/08/1976: Ruby Flipper dance to Morning Glory by James and Bobby Purify.

Well of course Sue, Patti and Lulu are looking lovely here: but Cherry, in that fuchsia & gold outfit looks absolutely fabulous. What a fine routine. My favourite moment? Patti’s mock-admonishing wagging finger at 0’38”.

Kudos to Phil for carrying off those silver wellies, too.

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post.

Ruby Flipper – A Fifth of Beethoven

Top of the Pops, 29 July 1976:
Ruby Flipper dance to A Fifth of Beethoven by Walter Murphy and his Big Apple Band.

Since this is based on a piece of classical music, presenter David Hamilton starts of with a variation on all-time classic creaky corny “just-flew-in … arms tired” gag beloved of stand of comedians.

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post.

From the old blog, Wednesday, 10 march 2010:

More Ruby Flipper on TOTP, on the 29th of July 1976. The music is A Fifth of Beethoven by Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band, a bit of kitschy funked-up classical fluff used in Saturday Night Fever.

Oh my! This clip has got me in quite a quandry. I just can’t decide who has the best legs. What do you think?

Wow!!!!!
and Shhhhhhhh! Let’s enjoy music and picture co-ordination while it lasts for this routine.
Finally a chance to see the authentic version of the Flipsters routine in it’s full uncensored glory.
Who’d have thought even Beethoven could be put into a disco groove – with great success!

Ruby Flipper – The Flasher

Top opt the Pops, 24 June 1976: Ruby Flipper dance to The Flasher by Mistura.

Thanks to panspeople.com for the YouTube post.

From the old blog, Thursday, 28 October 2010:

Am I a square? I’ve certainly never heard of The Flasher or Mistura, whether they’re featuring Lloyd Michels or not. I hear it’s an old Northern Soul Favourite. Anyway, here’s Cherry in the cutest Grass skirt, Patti in a posh frock and tiara, and Sue channelling the spirit of Shirley Temple: along with the usual Ruby Flipper blokes.

Sorry lads: of course I regard your dancing skills with the utmost respect, but that respect is drowned out by the howling gale of envy: my own envy, and the mountain of aggregate envy from every teenage boy in Britain in the summer of 1976. Peace.

A routine with some eclectic costumes and the Ruby Flipper routine with the most lifts. Gavin and Phil seem to manage fine but Floyd is straining a little near the end, lifting Sue.
An instrumental long consigned to obscurity but a decent enough tune.

Really smooth action from the Flipsters. The couples’ together are particularly good in this number. Jez’s palm tree also looking good BTW!

Thanks for posting this one with such alacrity YMG and what a great number it is, silky smooth and easily one of their best. Sue, that fairest of Flippers, that richest of Rubies looks fantastic in that great dress and dances a blinder. Oh, and the other three aren’t at all bad either.

yes at last my palm tree routine as finally been identified after 7 years of takin a guess as to what the routine was ,good song by gallagher and lyle also always reminds me of hot summer days ,cherry looks paricular good in this performance but she was always my favourite pans person ,i bet carl got himself excited when he saw this routine lol

carl said…

yes I was excited but I am the different Carl (bucksby) Whilst praising Sue on the forum I neglected to mention Cherry who also looks fantastic.
14 June 2011 14:45

Carl said…

Yes, I did get very excited Jez, as you will understand. It EXISTS!!
I’m the other Carl- It’s hello from me and it’s hello from him.
A very smooth and nicely choreographed number and not a sign of over-literal hearts on over-literal sleeves. That’s why the pictures of this on the TOTP 40th birthday DVD with other soundtrack, would have made it difficult to guess. Could have been ‘Afternoon Delight’ I suppose, but isn’t it evening time on the set with a full moon?

Thanks so much to YMG for putting it on the blog and getting this out into the public domain of cyberspace, where no one has until now been able to find it.
All four Ruby Flipper members look cool in this.

YMG,
when one does a Google search for Ruby Flipper ‘Heart On My Sleeve’
you are the first person to have posted it in the whole world on the www, as the only link that comes up thus far is this blog’s video.
You are a pioneer sir. You’ve done very well!

yes i thought you would be chuffed when this routine was shown carl ,it is really good to see a routine that has not been seen since the date of first transmission viewed again ,i must admit the very brief snippet of this routine that was included on the totp 40th anniversary dvd was very hard to determine which song went with the routine ,the only things that my brain would register with from that snippet was gold palm trees and the 4 dancers ,and i can still not understand when people say this is a recent recovery when it was included on the official bbc dvd at least six years ago ,i tell u what though if i could see pans people dancing again to the rare routines of you can do magic and seasons in the sun ,i would be like a little kid on xmas morning ,but i am for ever hopeful that one day some of these supposingly wiped clips will resurface somewhere

Yes Jez,
Amazing this had never ever got out on the Internet all these years. It’s a special routine because it was the only ‘missing’ RF routine that wasn’t technically missing.
Someone on Popscene was saying that this edition was discovered back in 2000 (I think)- so too late for U.K. Gold, but still enough time for Einsfestival. Wonder why Einsfestival were never sent this? I think Suefan suspects the copy wasn’t previously in good working order.

So a little beebie told me Carl, that it just needed a little work in places to make itself presentable as it were. Will be interesting to see the full version of the show on Saturday (I’m not stopping up for the Thursday night/Friday morning one).

Yes after about my twentieth viewing of this, im still not bored of it. Well worth the 35 year wait i must say, well for me anyway. Just cant fault it, even Sues bed sheet dress is starting to look good now.I just cant decide which period of time she looks sexiest in, if push comes to shove, id plump for the Ruby period. Yes Phil certainly gets the gig with this girl, lucky man, he looks kinda cool with his flared slacks and greased back hair!

Ruby Flipper – Jeans On

Top of the Pops, 5 August 1976:
Ruby Flipper dance while David Dundas performs Jeans On

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post.

from the old blog, Tuesday, 1 February 2011

Here’s another Ruby Flipper routine, dancing to Jeans On while David Dundas sings and plays. I don’t suppose there are any other feasible outfits for this song.

Wow.This is a real treat. Two Ruby Flipper videos in quick succession.
One of their simpler routines, but they had the more energetic ‘Shake Your Booty’ coming up later in the same edition
‘Jeans On’ is another mid-70s classic.
I heard some techno song recently which riffed the main melody of this.
Did Sue borrow Cherry’s famous shorts after the latter left RF?

Ruby Flipper – Soul City Walk

Top of the Pops 13th May 1976: Ruby Flipper dance to Archie Bell & the Drells’ Soul City Walk.

Thanks to ASmK for the YouTube post.

From the old blog, Wednesday, 30 December 2009

From the second week of Ruby Flipper’s run on TOTP, first broadcast on 13th May 1976. Here they dance to Archie Bell & the Drells’ Soul City Walk.

Though I usually try my best to avoid being so crude and disrespectful as to discuss anyone’s physical appearance, I neverless feel compelled to mention that those shorts really do suit Cherry particularly well

Taken again from Einsfestival’s re-broadcast of the original 1976 show. As before, nyrainbow4 has kindly posted a version of this clip on YouTube, but the Copyright Gestapo have forced him to replace the original soundtrack with something innocuous.

I didn’t mind Ruby Flipper, even though I am a Legs and Co man myself, and was glad to see them arrive. I think out of the males, Floyd was great in Ruby Flipper, and made them if I am honest, great mover very witty and a good actor with full of character. Love this song, and I like the set and dance routine to it, for that time it was pretty good going. Sue dances and looks extremely gorgeous in those tight jeans and heels she wears for this shoot, and that look hasn’t dated to today. A nice post. Benja 🙂
